Justin Boughton - Varsity Head Coach
Coach Boughton has been involved with lacrosse for over 15 years. He began coaching in the south lyon community in 2013 with our youth lacrosse program. In 2015 he took over as Head Coach for the South Lyon Unified JV team. After the 2016 season Coach Boughton moved into his new position as Varsity Head Coach. Since 2017 the Varsity team has won back to back undefeated conference championships (2017/2018), as well as making back to back appearances in the regional finals game (2017/2018). He is focused on a family and community first atmosphere. Prior to coaching he played 2 years at Adrian College when a knee injury took him to the sidelines where he served as a coaching assistant his final 2 years. He graduated from Adrian with a B.A in Criminal Justice. Coach Boughton graduated from Romulus High School where he played varsity lacrosse all 4 years and was team captain for 2 years. He was named team MVP and received the U.S. Army All American Award for academics and athletics his senior year.
Steve Tashman - Varsity Assistant Coach
In 2016 Steve Tashman joined the JV coaching staff as an assistant coach. He’s been a coach within the South Lyon Community for over a decade. He was a coach on the 2016 JV 17-0 team and the back-to-back Varsity Regional Finals teams of 2017-2018. He focuses on developing sound fundamentals and a higher IQ for the game, while encouraging relentless competition in a fun atmosphere. His primary beliefs for the boys are academics and the support of family, friends and community. Coach Tashman is a long time resident of South Lyon and a father of two boys; one graduate and one current player. Prior to joining the South Lyon Unified Boys Lacrosse coaching staff, he’s coached for the South Lyon Boys Lacrosse Club, the South Lyon Panthers, the South Lyon Junior League and various sports through the South Lyon Parks & Recreation Department.
Alan Stalter - Varsity Assistant Coach
In 2016, Alan Stalter joined the South Lyon Unified Boys Lacrosse coaching staff as a JV Assistant Coach. He was a coach on the 2016 JV 17-0 team and the back-to-back Varsity Regional Finals teams of 2017-2018. Coach Stalter has lived and coached within the South Lyon Community for over a decade and is the father of two student athletes. Prior to joining the SLU Boys Lacrosse coaching staff, he enjoyed coaching South Lyon High School Football, South Lyon Travel Basketball, South Lyon Parks & Recreation Football, South Lyon Junior League, South Lyon Panthers Football and the South Lyon Boys Lacrosse Club.
Nick Degroot - Junior Varsity Head Coach
Coach DeGroot has been involved in Lacrosse for 18 years. In his early years, he started playing for a youth Lacrosse league and then went on to play for the Varsity Lacrosse Men’s Team at Luke M. Powers Catholic High School in Flint, MI for all four years, and was named team captain his senior year. While in High School, Coach DeGroot helped coach and train the youth lacrosse in training camps. Coach DeGroot then went onto play at Adrian College where he was named team Captain for 3 out of the 4 years and received his B.A in Criminal Justice. He also played Football all four years of High School and won a State Championship in the 2005-2006 season. Coach DeGroot currently resides in South Lyon, MI and has been part of the South Lyon Unified Boys Lacrosse Team’s coaching staff since 2016.
Duane Sparks - Junior Varsity Assistant Coach
Before joining the South Lyon High School Coaching Staff in 2017, Coach Sparks coached youth lacrosse for 5 years for the South Lyon Boys Lacrosse Club. He was also SLBLC Vice President for 2 years, helping to expand and shape the youth program. His emphasis on developing strong lacrosse fundamentals, positional concepts and lacrosse IQ has contributed to the success of our youth players at the high school level. In 2013, he earned his US Lacrosse Level 1 Coaching Certification, and to this day, continues to educate himself on the fine details of the game by attending numerous coaching clinics, watching film and speaking with college coaches. Coach Sparks has been part of the South Lyon community for over a decade and also had the privilege to coach for South Lyon Panthers Football and Big Cat Basketball. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1993 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and has worked for Ford Motor Company as a F150 calibration engineer for 25 years.
